Default ub40 news in birmingham mail

REGGAE group UB40’s plans for a new city centre recording studio have stalled over fears it could cause the closure of Birmingham historic Gun Barrell Proof House.
The group’s studio, which would nurture young bands and musicians, was to be housed in a seven storey apartment block of 83 flats on the site of their old Dep International studio, in Andover Street But objections from the Gun Barrell Proof House next door, where firearms and ammunition have been tested since 1813, have forced a delay by city planners.

Dave Parker, spokesman for the band whose chart topping hits include Red Red Wine, said they are growing frustrated at the hold-up.

“We have been waiting six years for this to move forward. It would be very easy for the band to move outside the city, and would be cheaper,” he said.

“In 23 years with a studio in the area we have never had a single issue with the Proof House.”

But the council planning committee was told of fears that residents moving into the block could secure a Noise Abatement Order against the Gun Barrell Proof House, which discharges firearms up to 80 times a day, bringing an end to a vital part of Birmingham’s gun manufacturing industry.

It was set to approve the plan but a late submission from the Proof House showed that a Hertfordshire Rifle Range had been forced to close in 2002 after a residents on a new housing estate next door complained about the noise.

Coun Ian Ward (Lab, Shard End) said that the situation was similar to the Fiddle and Bone pub which was forced to stop playing live music due to complaints from residents of a new apartment block.

He said: “I am very concerned that any residential development may, in the future, result in the loss of a piece of Birmingham’s heritage and history.”

A spokesman for developer, Concept Development Solutions of Coleshill, pointed out that another residential block, the Curzon Park scheme, was a similar distance from the Proof House and had been approved without objection.

can't objections be over ruled!!!

why has it taken 6 years.........sounds slow and painful!!!!!!!

i live in hertsfordshire.............worried well here with nothing better to do!!!! we complain about everything!!! Strange it has an impact on b/ham case?????
Bringing in projects to cities is suppose to be productive isn't it? Herts doesn't need that, not comparable????

some of us are ok in Herts though
And Uncle Sam's poodle's in need of a shrink.

bearing in mind this is a newspaper article, if there is any truth in this, then any place that would contemplate giving anything to do with guns, precedence over music, then they can't claim, to have a heritage to be proud of
I never said it was your fault!
I'm just going to blame you!

Very interesting indeed.
I'm a British subject not proud of it while I carry the burden of shame.
