View Full Version : Who remembers Brookside?

One of the best tv programmes EVER. To call it a 'soap opera' does it no justice. I used to love this programme. There hasn't been anything as good since it finished about 9 years ago.

I couldn't believe it when I found out who killed Terry's wife either. (!)

Let's not forget Damon and Debbie - that was pretty good.

I thought Brooky was a top show, I don't care WHAT Sal says! :-)

That was Barry Grant Mags. I was just going to type much the same thing

Loved Brookie Imani - up until the last couple of years when it seriously went off the boil.

I was addicted to Brookside, in it's heyday it was the best soap of them all, and had all the hallmarks of good drama. It's a shame that eventually it ate itself. But i suppose it's too much to ask to keep that kind of quality going forever.

Loved Brookie shame it ended

The best soap ever, in my opinion. Loved it from day one and still miss it to this day. Eastenders is a quality soap as well though.

For me, Brookside started to fall apart when Channel 4 started to alter the programme time for the Saturday omnibus, after securing the rights to braodcast the cricket. Brookside's audience figures were based as much on the omnibus viewings, as they were for the evening figures in the week. When they started to broadcast the omnibus at irregular times on a Saturday, you'd end up missing a few weeks, then trying to play catch up with the story lines and eventually not really undertanding who is who and what is what, then ultimately not really giving a toss. They also tamperd the nights of the week it was broadcast on. A fatal move in my opinion.

In an attempt to halt the decline in viweres the scriptwriters would write ever more outlandish storylines, which didn't really fit in with the Brookside ethos. Eventually, it simply crawled up its own arse and died!

Shame really. It'd be great if one of the UK Gold type braodcasters were to repeat it in full.

Later,

UKW.

Ok, ok. Not the knitting, stamp collecting or bird watching. BUT - my six year old son is a full-on, and self confessed train spotter! He drags me to steam train museums, exhibitions and all kinds at the weekends. Seriously! His bedtime read is often a steam train magazine as he wants to know about top speeds and coal capacity. I think he gets his dorkiness from his mother (cough).

Yes, I know exactly what you all mean by the programme 'losing the plot' towards the end. i don't think Phil Redmond was writing for it by that time. And the schedules: They started doing that with Dr Who. with every change of schedule there was a different 'Time Lord' :-)

I loved the gritty realism of the programme. I think what made it so special was that many of those actors didn't come across as products of 'drama school'. They seemed to have a natural ability coming from the school of life experience. I'm not knocking people who go through those institutions but people connected with the realness of the characters.

Bring back 'Play for Today' as well. Brookie was the nearest thing to it.

I think UK Gold did repeat it once... quite some time ago. At least they started to. Not sure how far into the series they reached though. Wonder if it would stand the test of time today.

Unfortunately it really did lose its vision after Phil Redmond went on to other projects.

Brookside should be brought back, it was one of the best soaps around and Phil Redmond is one of the best drama writers around.
