From the book 'CATCH A FIRE':

On the cover of his final album Confrontation, Bob was depicted as an Ethiopian horseman transformed into St. George slaying the dragon. The legend of St George had its roots in Christian Ethiopia, where the walls of a church in ancient Lalabella, Axum (now Tigre), built circa 600 C.E, were adorned with images of the saint slaying the fire breathing dragon.

Neville Garrick had once considered putting an illustration of St George on the back of the Kaya sleeve, and in the full colour draft of Confrontation cover the dragon had a mitre, a liturgical headdress worn by the Pope, on its head. Chris Blackwell vetoed the idea, fearing it might alienate Catholic
supporters amongst Bob's ranks

Thought I would share a bit more from the great biography:

...... Chris Blackwell vetoed the idea, fearing it might alienate Catholic supporters amongst Bob's ranks

Had the image of the papacy as slain satan been allowed to prevail as album art, it would have struck a dread chord in devout Rasta precincts, since settlements throughout Jamaica had been abuzz since 1981 with the sinister Vatican related events making global headlines.

I.e., 953 members of the Italian establishment-including several members of the then prime minister Forlani's cabinet- were members of the ultrasecret masonic lodge known as 'P2'...many P2 figures were linked to evil doings in the Vatican bank that included alleged diversion of the Church's funds to the CIA and Mafia by Michele Sindona (P2 financier/Vatican investment counselor)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find this intriguing. In my studies, I've found that the Vatican based Jesuit Order/Society of Jesus have played a largely unpublicised role in the sweep of world events- especially global wars, assassinations, etc. Not to be confused with genuine Catholicism, The Superior General of the Jesuits known as the Black Pope is the most powerful man on the planet at any given time (certainly more powerful than ANY G-8 leader and P2 also), yet he is largely unknown to most. The Pope on public display is referred to in some circles as the 'white pope'.

Rastas have been chanting down the Vatican and the Pope for a long time- only now the penny's starting to drop.

I love this clip of Bob from 1976 doing 'Want More'- laying down the dub...that bassline is incredible.
