Default What is considered UB's best album?

You know how each band have an album EVERYONE knows is the best... Not nessecaraly (hate spelling that word lol) your favourite, just what everyone thinks is the best/most well made

MJ = Thriller
Beatles = Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Queen = A Night At The Opera
Bob Marley = Exodus
David Bowie = Ziggy Stardust
Blur = Parklife
Oasis = Whats The Story Morning Glory
Prince = Purple Rain

and so on

My favourite UB40 album (it changes daily) at the moment is UB44.

But what is considered their best? Am i right in thinking Promises And Lies? Or LOL1?

i'd say it might be signing off as they obviously sold enough of that record to sign off, which if it hadnt been for that record they might not have signed off

Ani (signing off)

good question npg

I think their most critically acclaimed album is probably Signing Off. I'm guessing it'll be because its when they first started out, it sounded very raw and spawned many a rootsy tune. In fact, wasn't it among the '100 albums you must own' that has been released in various music magazines. Personally, I think its up their with the very best that reggae has to offer and widely respected by other reggae artists. For more commercial albums, you can obviously look at LOL1, P & L, GITG which are all excellent albums but around 1983, the boys started getting a few pelters for what people percieved as 'selling out'.

Good question though

At the end of the day, doesn't it all just boil down to personal taste?

As much as I like Signing Off, to choose a band's first album could be seen as being very negative towards the rest of their output; though it holds a very soft spot in my heart.

Signing off for me too. It defined what the band were and they evolved from there. Listening to the album and seeing them doing a few local gigs was a treat, especially at that time they were going through the same troubles as the rest of us Brummies in that awful time, for unemployment etc. Knowing they were from my area to and drank in the same pubs I did (I lived in Balsall Heath Road) gave you a sense, gave you sense of belonging to their music because you could draw on the same experiences that they experienced.

Respect
