I woke up this morning to read, shockingly, that the man found guilty of killing 77 people in Norway has been sentenced to only 21 years in prison, with time already served to be credited, and could only serve 10 if he behaves himself for the next while.
As much as his actions were obviously those of an extremist (he has admitted he is far-right and part of him was driven to do this against multiculturism), and I do believe that most extremists do have a degree of mental illness, I cannot believe that he would only get 21 years. I understand that Norway doesn't have the death penalty, but 21 years for 77 lives?!?! Curious on others views of the sentencing. |

Im with you on this one trish.
You might have noticed that I'm not a great supporter of our prison systems. I fully believe in the old saying that 90% of those in jail should never have been put there, and 10% should never be let out. For me, that norwegian nutter is definitely one of those 10%. One of the few cases where he should be locked up, and throw away the key. |

He could be out under 9 years Trish as he's served 400 odd days.Agree with the others,he should never be let out.

This is a classic case of "Guilty, no doubt about it" and he should be put to death for his actions. this IS what the death penalty is for.

lets ask what the norwegians think...
it happened in their country, to their people by one of their own... our opinions are irrelevent. and i doubt he will ever be released. |

Omg!! that is so bad, throw away the key, how can someone who killed all those people be can be released after only serving 21 years he should get a life sentance for each one he killed, so he comes out in a box in other words, its like he's only doing what just over 3 months for each person he has killed, just wrong ggrrr

Interesting to see how restrained everyone inside and outside the court was.Relatives of the victims were measured and difnified in their responses to reporters. From what I saw I couldn't imagine the police having to hold back an angry crowd as the prison van took him away.Very different to what happens when an emotive case comes to court in this country.

I always think that keeping killers alive is a better punishment...I agree with Tish you have to be on some wrong side of the normality curve when you do something like that ..you must be totally divorced from any feelings ....
I don't know though how 21 years can be justified though ...it seems a gross miscarriage of justice and a human rights abuse of the hundreds of people who have been affected by his actions |
