Default Favourite UB40 Era

whats everyones favourite decade for UB40 stuff? I'm a relatively new fan in that I didn't get into them till the late 90s, but I know a lot on here have followed them since the beginning. So, for albums and live shows, do people prefer..

80s (Signing Off, Present Arms, UB44, LOL1, Geffery Morgan, Baggariddim, RITK, UB40 & LOL2 etc)

90s (Promises and Lies, GITG, LOL3 etc)

or

00s (Cover Up, Homegrown, WYFF, 24/7 and soon to be LOL4 etc)

Looking at the above it seems they did far less work in the 90s than the other two decades lol. Maybe thats when they did the most touring.

I wish i'd seen them in the 80s and early 90s but unfortunately my parents were more into Billy Joel so I only have their 00s live shows to go by.

What does everyone think about the way they have evolved over the years? Did people prefer the earlier more raw and less finely tuned stuff? Or are they better now than they have ever been?

And another thing i've always wanted to know.....during the bad times with Ali's drinking and stuff, did the fans notice a big difference or was it all covered up??

Early days were most memorable....well a few that I can remember still!....so I say that the recent times are the best , only because of how fresh in my mind they are...

I do like the early shows but it has been a privilege to see how the band have developed and the sound has just got better over the years.

Great answer Father. I wish I'd been at the St Andrews gig - saw it on the tv.
Have to agree on the best album, 'UB40' is still my favourite. ALL the songs are great and could stand alone - no "fillers" in my opinion. I guess that as this was the period I first got into the UBs, it holds a special place in my heart. Also, my two favourite songs ever are on this album - "Where Did I Go Wrong" & "I Would Do For You"

My first UB gig was Finsbury Park - in fact my first proper gig ever.
I shall be forever grateful to Kath's (Kathryn2804) stepdad for driving us the 240 miles each way!
Poor bloke had to put up with two excited teenage girls in the back of his van!

So....to answer your question Hels, I'd have to say late 80s/early 90s & 2008 onwards! (Although of course there have been many cracking songs and gigs in the years in between. Oh and I love Present Arms & UB44 so early 80s was good too, damn it, this is a hard question!)

Tough one....But after watching them from back in day......rock against Thatcher..my Stand out times were the 90's ..... Wonderful

Loved the St Andrews Gig as well ..& the way it was the first time a LIVE show was brought via TV, Channel 4 i think.(Even if the feed was delayed by 3 or 4 minutes for ads lol...) sound was great

But the 90's were special for me.....I still think Musically & Sound wise Technology, UB's just sound better & more refined & crisper every day, & i love the way they experiment with that too

& as tedders says ..Now the future looking good.

LOL4 sounds wicked

Great choice of choons

I'd pick the 80's the gigs were loud and bolshy and that was just the audience.

Each era has it's own memories.

Musically, the better albums are from UB40, Promises & Lies, GITG, Labour of Loves, to the present, but add on Signin Off, Present Arms, UB44 from the past....The missing Cd's geffery morgan, RITK apart from a few tracks arn't that memorable as CD's, but the gigs where still good at the time it's a hard question to answer.

Touring i'd pick the 80's and 2000's not the 90's i remember going to St Andrews and P&L tour, that's it, didn't they take 5 years off until LOL 3 was released.

80's for me
That's when I discovered them.

Signing Off, Present Arms, Live, UB44 - absolutely raw talent.

I was hooked
