Aldi didn't like doing interviews in those days, so they were mainly done by me BT and RBC, oh, and astro, once he became a full member of the band after signing off.
It was only when we stopped selling so many records that any problems started.
Aldi had dumped his family and taken up with some groupie that used to hang around the band. And in a parody of spinal tap we started getting instructions on how to manage the band from his new gold digging girlfriend.
Obviously we nearly choked on our bongs when that happened. We were waiting for her to suggest we wore prada versions of our star signs on stage.
Aldi stopped coming to meetings, we would get the occasional instructions from her, but didn't see very much of him.
The band decided it was time for us to tour, but we kept getting delaying messages from aldi's new 'management' that he would be unable to tour. This was around the time of writing 24/7. He spent a couple of weeks laying down vocals and that was his only input on the record. All the arranging and production and lyric writing was done by the band.
When it was time to release 24/7, aldi kept blocking it. It was then that we found out he was working on his solo record, and later we found out he had booked an arena tour under his own name.
He moved away from birmingham and, with the lady macbeth style encouragement from his new gold digging girlfriend, turned his back on all his family and friends.
He [with her encouragement] decided he didn't need his mates any more. And that those old mates were leeches living off his god-given talent. They convinced themselves that without aldi we would just lie down and give up, leaving everything open for them to fill their boots on UB40's legacy.
Except it didn't turn out that way.
His solo records turned out to be mediocre at best, and his arena tour was cancelled. He's been struggling ever since. Which is why, earlier this year he started advertising himself as UB40 again. seven years after leaving the band.
That's because UB40 didn't give up but carried on with duncan, his brother, on vocals. That was generously supported by UB40 fans. Which is why, seven years after changing singers, we are still doing sell out shows all over the world.
Our ex singer had a mid-life crisis, and got taken advantage of by some unscrupulous people. It's a shame. we tried to stop it happening. But in the end we all have to be responsible for the consequences of our own decisions. that includes the two chancers, mickey and astro.
UB40 would never have separate management because we trust each other. Our loyally is without question. to each other and to the band.
When the going gets tough you get the true measure of somebodies character.

can't really blame her in the end R. he's a grown man who should take responsibility for his decisions. But I think a few people have taken advantage of our ex singers dysfunctional personality [very needy alcoholic with anger issues].
When he was part of UB40 his friends and brothers helped to protect him from himself.
When he turned his back on that he became vulnerable to people who thought when they saw him they saw pound signs over his head, and they've been trying [and failing] to exploit him and UB40 ever since.
remember, his wife, management and musicians were NEVER part of the UB40 story. Even though they are using our name.

When it is put as straight forward as that it is hard to argue with anything that the band have done since the split. As heart wrenching as it must have been, with good mates going through such an acrimonious break up of the original line up, massive credit has to go to the band for betting back to where they are now, they are obviously totally back in love with what they do and long may it continue.

I so want to comment, time and time again, but know it is not worth the vent. We all know the dirty rotten scoundral that is Aldi Campbell; and not the rest of them....

I think your comments there completely sum it up for me Jim......and the sentence about his wife, management and musicians is the bit that grieves me the most I'm not going to knock his backing band as musicians but when the hell was the Dep Band EVER entitled to suddenly BECOME UB40?????? So damn wrong that......wonder how they actually feel about it all??
