Courting legend, throwing seeds

British reggae stalwarts turn 25

I call UB40 lead singer Ali Campbell from a pay phone at a truck stop midway between Montreal and Halifax, on my way to the Juno Awards. Ali is waking up at some casino desert resort in California, the day after a gig, and he's just ordered a burger from room service.
"Award shows are about people congratulating themselves," Campbell tells me when he learns about the Junos. "They're about selling units."

And UB40 know a thing or two about selling units: From their 1983 classic Red Red Wine to their huge worldwide hit cover of Elvis Presley's I Can't Help Falling in Love, which I remember hearing in discos up and down Africa in the summer of '93, UB40 have been one of the U.K.'s biggest musical exports over the last quarter century.

"We've been to Africa many, many times," says Campbell. "[One time] in Maputo we sold 55,000 tickets. We've been touring for 23 years, though [at one point] we stopped touring America where [UB40 trumpeter] Astro has no visa since he was caught cultivating [ganja]. I think they think he'll throw seeds from the tour bus window!"

Campbell used to live in Jamaica for 17 years, in the parish of Oracabessa not far from the homes of James Bond creator Ian Fleming and Montreal radio legend Angus Mackay. But this tour will see UB40 performing in Jamaica as a band for the very first time.

"I'm really nervous for the audience," Campbell
says. "I went to Sting '95 and [thugs] shot a 17-year-old boy. I won't do a show with that ****ing shit. So we're going in with our own equipment and own security. It's about time we play there. I mean, we've played with all the legends. And on this tour there are young people in the audience who weren't alive our first time round. It's inevitable when you've been around as long as us. I think that gives us legendary status!"

Does anybody know when and where Astro was arrested or caught with ganja?
Also, I thought visa requirements for UK citizens entering US was a relatively new phenomenon, introduced after 9/11. Am I wrong?
