UB40
PRESENT ARMS
and
LABOUR OF LOVE
Deluxe Editions

2ND MARCH 2015

These 3-CD Deluxe Editions bring together, for the first time on physical and digital, UB40ís 1981 album Present Arms and its companion release from later that same year, Present Arms In Dub alongside their hit-strewn 1983 album, Labour of Love. Each album is also being released as a 2-LP set on 180g vinyl.
Released in May 1981, the platinum-selling Present Arms spent 38 weeks in the UK album chart where it reached the No. 2 position. Present Arms In Dub was released in October 1981 and spent seven weeks in the chart. In addition this new deluxe edition includes a 12Ē version of the Top 20 single, Donít Slow Down plus BBC Radio 1 session tracks and a BBC Radio 1 concert, Live from the Paris Theatre, both recorded in 1981. Present Arms is the second album to be recorded by UB40 and it spawned two Top 20 UK hits, One In Ten and Donít Let It Pass You By/Donít Slow Down. Like their debut album release, it concerned itself with many socially and politically charged themes, resonating with the politically uncertain times of the early 1980s when unemployment was rife and race riots afflicted many of the countryís inner cities. One In Ten was an undisguised attack on the Thatcher government of the period.

Originally released in 1983, Labour of Love was the bandís fourth LP release and is made up entirely of UB40ís cover versions of songs by some of their favourite musical idols. It includes the hits, Red, Red Wine (UK #1); Cherry, Oh Baby (UK #12), Many Rivers To Cross (UK #16) and Please Donít Make Me Cry (UK #10). The album reached number 1 in the UK and number 8 in the U.S. and, in 1989, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 98 in their list of The 100 Greatest Albums of the Ď80s.

Each set comes complete with new liner notes by respected reggae writer, David Katz.

Taking their name from the unemployment benefit claim form of the period, UB40 formed in Birmingham in 1978 and released their first album, Signing Off in 1980. The band went onto achieve huge international success and continue to play to sell-out halls to the present day.
UB40 start a brand new tour on 19th March, which will run in the UK from 3rd May until 4th June.

it would be nice if someone explained why this keeps getting delayed..
it does seem very odd....
is there an issue with the liciencing.
i can see a problem with the songwriting/publishing issue, as the songs were credited to the original (inc the ex 3) band,
and now the other 3 have buggered off, maybe they are not playing ball or something.. thats if they have any say at all.
who owns the songs now? and do the band (inc the ex 3) get a royalty from them?

The last I remember reading somewhere was that the band had to sell of everything regarding licencing etc. so they don't own anything anymore. Sony bought the publishing and licencing rights to the entire UB40 catologue.

Obviously the band will receive some form of payment as the performing artists but my recolection is that there are still debts outstanding so they may not receive anything at all and this is just and exercise to clear debts. Kind of sucks for the fans really that yet again the same old music from decades past is being rebranded and flogged to the fans. It has all gone very sad indeed that such a one time huge band are in this situation..

Egos and pride should have been swallowed years ago and the split with Ali should never have happened. Since he has left the band are doing nothing apart from play live shows with songs Ali sung and made into hit records..

Go on start the abuse against me, it only ever comes from a handful at best usual suspects but that is the fact of the matter, that the split has not been great for either side but especially more so for the remaining members. You can't just bring in another singer and think he can replace Ali, the only hits UB40 has had is with Ali siging. Nothing at all in the last 7 years without him.. For the fans same sort the differences out. For the band/finance also sort the differences out. It's like watching children behave with the egos and pride taking centre stage.. Rant over

that the split has not been great for either side but especially more so for the remaining members. You can't just bring in another singer and think he can replace Ali,....

I have to disagree on this....why especially more for UB40 who never folded but continued and seem to be doing quite a bit more from what I've been seeing, than those who moved on.
And also I think there seems to be a misunderstanding when it comes to replacing. It's replacing a 'singer' not an Ali replica.

Thank you

ANiMALicious 15th May 2015 02:47 PM

Got to disagree with you UKGuy.

Its Ali raking up all the old songs and singing them under the title UB40.

Ok so the real UB40 hasn't had a "hit" in 7 years, but they have certainly made new music... remember all the slagging off due to it being C&W style reggae?
what has Ali done? other than sing UB40 songs... and fool the public into thinking he is the real UB40...
but if you look back... UB40 aren't interested in making "Hit" records, never have been, they are about continuity and pleasing there fans, making people dance and enjoy themselves.

also as a side note, my dog could have REPLACED Ali...

'It has all gone very sad indeed that such a one time huge band are in this situation' - lots of heritage bands are from the '80s in the same boat

'split with Ali should never have happened. Since he has left the band' - make up your mind....so was it a split or did he leave and who chose to cover Britney Spears and Tom Jones?

'You can't just bring in another singer and think he can replace Ali' - they didn't just bring in 'another' singer..................UB40 is a collective of rhythm section, horns, guitars and vocals............decent song writing which always came from Brian, Robin and Jimmy............

See no abuse just a reasoned reply..............there you go.

i actually though about answering all his points, but decided it wasn't worth the effort... they've seen all the replies before, but they go on repeating the mantra....

Know what you mean Roger but we're better off repudiating this sort of stuff with a bit of grace and good manners.

Ghost 8th August 2017 08:59 PM

After 3 Years waiting...I have the deluxe edition of Present Arms :bounce:

realgone 27th August 2017 06:13 PM

I've *finally* got the deluxe editions! I honestly thought they were never coming...

A quick question to anyone who's got the 3CD 'Present Arms'...

Do all copies have an odd glitch at approx 2.28 into 'Tyler' on disc 3's BBC live recording? It's like there's split second missing and/or they've used the track's guitar reverb to blank out something...

Yes don't worry there was a slight problem obviously when the recording took place because all copies are like it or at least mine is but these things can happen in a live situation

realgone 27th August 2017 06:22 PM

Cheers mate. Thought it might be the case, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't have a faulty one.

dread rock 27th August 2017 06:26 PM

One of the fans put it up on Facebook to listen to a long time before the Deluxe Edition of Present Arms was finally released and it was the same on there so no worries
